What is a Nordic tyre?
The Nordic tyre, often called a friction tyre, is the solution for severe winters. Its superiority is based on three major technical features:
- "Soft Compound" rubber blend: Its high natural rubber content allows it to remain extremely supple even at temperatures down to -30°C. It does not harden in frost and conforms to the microscopic irregularities of the ice surface.
- High-density siping: Its tread is cut with thousands of deep, self-locking sipes. They act like thousands of biting edges in snow and clear the thin film of water present on black ice, ensuring direct contact with the road surface.
- Aggressive tread pattern with sharp edges: Its square shoulders and aggressive grooves provide optimal bite in packed snow. This pattern ensures maximum traction in deep snow or icy slush.
Nordic tyre or winter tyre: which should you choose?
The choice depends on your climate and the typical condition of the roads you drive on.
The Nordic tyre is the specialist for extreme conditions. It is essential for daily driving on icy roads or compacted snow. It is designed for temperatures below -10°C. Its ultra-soft compound is specifically engineered not to harden in frost, ensuring maximum grip where a conventional winter tyre reaches its limits.
The winter tyre is more versatile. It remains effective on fresh snow and wet roads. It is ideal if your journeys are mainly on cleared or salted roads. It offers more precise handling on tarmac and wears more slowly on dry surfaces.
Nordic tyre or studded tyre: what’s the difference?
The choice between a Nordic tyre and a studded tyre comes down to how frequently you drive on icy roads and local regulations.
The studded tyre offers the most extreme grip on ice and black ice. Its metal studs bite into the ice to ensure braking and traction where no rubber alone can grip. However, it is subject to strict restrictions (periods of use, speed limits). It is also noisier and wears quickly on dry or cleared roads.
The Nordic tyre is the versatile alternative to the studded tyre. It relies on its friction compound technology to deliver comparable safety performance on snow and black ice and carries no legal restrictions. It is the ideal choice for harsh winters and for cleared road sections where the studded tyre is unsuitable.
